Itch, Itch... Scratch, Scratch!

Dear blog readers,

Okay so I need some help! Camille Goldy, I'm counting on you, and anyone else that knows about skin and hair care. So Arizona is awesome, our family loves so many things about it here. We love the weather this time of year, we love our neighborhood, we love our ward, and we love the schools here... but I have one complaint... the dry air. This is probably a little morbid but I swear that the first layer of my scalp has peeled off... just like snake skin!... and I'm itchy! I wake up in the morning with these random scratches all over my body (I guess I'm scratching in my sleep or something)... so HELP... what shampoo and conditioner should I be using to moisten my scalp and what lotion should I use for really dry skin? I never had this problem in Utah!!!

Sincerely yours,

Dry morbid snake-scalp girl!

  2. TC, so you totally caught me (the whole spying thing.) I found your blog off one of my friends and it's so good to see you and everyone else in our neighborhood doing so well. It's fun to see that all of us have kids and families and are all in the same boat. Life is Crazy and kids are crazier. But well worth it. Since I check our your blog ALOT, you should check out mine. Your family is so darn cute. Your boys are darling, I can only imagine the headaches you get by watching the constant moving around!!! I have 3 boys and they are so fun and we never stop moving or laughing cause I think thats the only way we can survive is by ALOT of laughter!!! My blog is benandbrookerollins.blogspot.com

  3. Sheesh. I'm feeling some pressure now. Honestly, one of the best things I can tell you to do for a dry scalp is to wash your hair less. Washing it dries it out additionally to the dry climate. So when your hair gets greasy, sprinkle a little baby powder in it, and skip the washing for a couple days. I know, you are totally grossed out by the thought...but it works better than any overpriced product I can recommend. I can give you specific step-by-step instructions if you'd like.
As for the dry skin: you have to bathe, sorry- no skipping daily hygeine practices there. I recommend using a fragrance free moisturizing creme. Anything that has a fragrance (say from bath and body works) has a lot of alcohol in it, which dries out your skin. I actually really like the off-brand of cetaphil, sold at wal-mart or wal-greens, or wherever. Good luck snake girl, and if none of that works, just come visit me in the Northwest--not so dry here!

  4. I hear ya lady. It's dry here too, and I've tried I don't know how many different shampoos and conditioners. I swear it's not dandruff. I have even stopped putting any product in my hair just to make sure. I guess I'll just have to break down and buy some really expensive crap that my kids will want to use or dump and then I'll get mad, and I'll have to go buy more.

  5. Okay couple of things do you have soft water? That would help so much and after the breast cancer I have to use lotion that is balanced for PH whatever that is and I was told Curel was the best. I swear by the soft water it is expensive though but so worth it. love you all Suzanne

  6. I have no advice on the scalp, sorry. But I can tell you that Gold Bond lotion is awesome for dry skin! It's a little more expensive, but it's worth it! You can get it at Walmart and sometimes Costco. Good luck! My sis-in-law has had the same problem since she moved here from Seattle in November.

  7. That is crazy that you say that. Tommy was there last weekend and when he got home his lips were literally peeling off. I don't know what to say or do, but I'm so sorry that would be horrible! Dry scalp and all, I still think your hot!!!!

  8. Okay..my 2 cents. For the scalp. Try using a shampoo that is "sulfate free" there are a few out there and the one I just started using last week is called Pureology. It is pricey, but "sodium laurel sulfate" is in almost every shampoo and it is an ingredient that dries out your hair. I have noticed a difference already (and I have been just putting conditioner in every other day instead of washing every day and that seems to help). I also use the Eucerin Calming Creme from Costco and it works pretty well.

We were just there over the weekend. The weather is amazing. I didn't email you in time to get your #, but if we are there again I will have to call you. For the Dry skin I have a couple tips. For the dry skin try baby oil on your skin right after you get out of the shower. Then lotion.
And for your scalp, you should go without washing for as long as you can- at least 2-3 days. Wash once a week at night and leave a deep conditioner in over night-my fav is K-Pak. (Sorry the store brands are bad for you hair and will just dry your scalp out worse. THey are not PH balanced right) I love Biolage Hydrating or Smooth. I have also liked a product called ENJOY. Try not to use product that has alcohol. Hope this helps. If not just bath in Crisco!!
