So, I worry.

I’m worried about Jack.  Is this something that people blog about?  I often feel as though I’m breaking the “secret unspoken blog code” when I post more about my fears and concerns and worries and more about my REAL life than I do about vacations and accomplishments and amazing FHE lessons that seem to go off without a single hitch, but I’m not good at obeying that code… my life isn’t like that… is yours?  Really?

Anyway, back to breaking the code.

I am truly worried about Jack.  I mean, as his mom I am blessed to see all the wonderful attributes and talents that this boy possesses.  I see his innocence, his heart, his love, his intentions, his goodness… but, I’m his mom, so it’s really easy for me.

I volunteered in Jack’s 3rd grade class for his “Holiday” class party and witnessed some, well I witnessed some things that left me a little discouraged for my Jack.  And, as any mother, as any parent or grandparent can relate to… my heart hurt for my little man.

Jack has some speech “issues”.  They don’t seem too drastic but this year he actually qualified for speech therapy through his school.  I was happy about this.  We were taking him to speech therapy on our own and it’s a bit PRICY, so this was good news.

On Friday, the day of the party, I noticed just how much of a communication issue Jack has with his peers.  I watched as he talked to other kids that weren’t really listening to him tell a story, they weren’t mean or disrespectful, they just kind of looked right past Jack.  Luckily for me, Jack didn’t even seem to notice.  He just kept telling his story as though he were the center of attention.  But, my fear kicked in and my logics kicked in and I realized that it won’t be long until he notices what I noticed.  I saw, for the first time, that Jack just didn’t have a speech issue, but he actually has a hard time communicating.  He has a hard time expressing himself and is often misunderstood.  He wanted to play “heads-up seven-up” during the party and specifically asked me if I could make sure he was picked to be in front of the class because (as he explained) he isn’t picked much when the class has played this game in the past.  Oh come on, put my heart back in my chest people.

This has been a hard realization for me.  Ugh, having kids is so hard.  I am having a hard time not feeling sorry for myself.  I’m having a hard time not calling all the parents to those who have kids that associate with Jack and begging them to tell their 8 and 9 year olds to have extra patience with Jack as he’s trying to share an idea or offer up suggestions or just engage in whatever conversation is taking place (yeah, I realize that my request is unrealistic when it involves 8 and 9 year olds but so what!).

I want to scream to everyone that I have to constantly worry about Bella because of the struggles she was just born with.  I have no extra worry left in me for Brayden and Jack… they just need to have things be easy for them… for the sake of me!   But this just isn’t working out.

Brayden Blaine.  My “perfect pleasing” 10 year old.  Brayden is great socially.  He gets what it takes to make and keep friends.  He is likable and funny BUT Brayden is a perfectionist.  I have to constantly remind him that it is okay to not be perfect.  I was a little lot like this when I was a kid so I have a pretty good idea of the destructive thinking patterns of a perfectionist.  I want to scream from the top of the mountains that it’s okay for this little man to have flaws and faults and to just TRY his best, even if that isn’t perfection... because it won’t be.  This kid is so hard on himself and he is full of worry and anxiety.  He has even been officially diagnosed with an “anxiety disorder”.  Seriously?

So, I worry.

Jack Jolley.  My  “kind hearted socially unaware” 9 year old.  Jack is smart.  Jack does his homework with so much ease.  It’s natural.  Jack also has one of the biggest hearts, he is real and loyal and just wants to fit in BUT he doesn’t fit in.  And I don’t get it.  I want to tell everyone what they are missing out on by not “letting him in”… (LET HIM IN people… didn’t any of you see “The Forgotten Carol”?) LET HIM IN.  I feel like being able to fit in socially is maybe more important than being smart or creative or even physically capable.  And I’m noticing that Jack is socially awkward and this terrifies me.  Is he going to end up addicted to drugs or alcohol or other substances due to his eagerness and strive to “fit in”?  Seriously, does anyone want to set up a play date with Jack?  Please say YES.  Please call me or text me or email me or leave a comment… PLEASE.  I’m scared.

So, I worry.

Anabelle Jane.  My “physically behind, behaviorally behind, forgiving loving” 6 year old.  Bella is so witty and so funny and so smart and so sweet BUT Bella has some difficult health issues.  Bella was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was 2 ½ or maybe 3 years old.  The CP has created some physical complications for Bella but I watch in amazement as her “limp” or her “tilted foot” seems to hardly be noticeable these days.  However, Bella is behind.  Bella struggles with homework, she struggles with understanding cause and effect or consequences.  I think I tell myself that she is still young and that I don’t need to worry too much right now but I’m not very good at fooling myself.  Bella has such a hard time LISTENING and OBEYING some most instructions.  We are in the process of figuring out if/which medications will help her but it’s so hard and slow and scary.

So, I worry.

Okay, so I was just going to lightly suggest that I may be a little worried about Jack in this post but it looks like this has turned into some deep confession I have for all my children.  And, whoever said writing things out makes one feel better was a LIAR because writing all this out has my stomach in knots… so what is it that I was searching for by posting this?  Good question, I have no idea.

Quotes to Remember…

I have compiled quotes from my kids over the last few years. Things they have said that made me laugh. Things that I NEVER want to forget. So, tonight, while putting off all the things I SHOULD be doing, I thought I'd create a post on the sweet and randomly hilarious things my kids say… wasn't there a T.V. show about this?

Jack Jolley

May 2011:
Jack: "dear heavenly father, we are thankful for this day, we are thankful for this food, please bless the food, please bless that we will have the spirit in our hearts, please bless grandpa Gary that he is having a good time in heaven, please bless that we will all have a good time in heaven..."

June 2011:

A lady in our ward sang "I Know My Heavenly Father Loves Me" in our sacrament meeting.  When she finished Jack looked up at me and asked me "mom, did she sing I Know My Heavenly Father Loves Me or did she sing I know all the husbands love me?"  Basically I had to get up and leave the meeting in order to compose myself.  I'm not sure I even answered him!!!

September 2012:
Jack forgot to take the money to school for the Entertainment Book fundraiser.  When I pointed this out and mentioned that he needs to work on remembering and being more responsible he said "well mom, at least we still have God".  Yes we do Jack, yes we do!

Bella Jolley

September 2012:
A conversation with my kids today...
Me: "ok so dad and I are going on a date tonight, you guys better be
good for the babysitter"
Kids: "where are you guys going?"
Me: "the temple"
Bella: "are you going to the temple to get married?"
Me: "no! I'm already married"
Bella: "are you going to the temple to get me married?"
Me: "hahahahaha!!"

March 2013:
Bella, for the first time, jumping on a trampoline with bungie cords attached was so excited.  She exclaimed "mom, this is all I ever dreamed of.  I can't believe this is happening!!"

Brayden Jolley

May 2012:
Brayden counting his money and doing the math for his tithing and asking, "So mom, how much do I have to pay Jesus?"

May 2013:
Mom: "Brayden, how come you have been so sick lately?"
Brayden: "I think it's because Jesus is going to come soon. It says in the scriptures that there will be lots of sickness right before he comes."
Mom: "well, I'd better get my crap together then, huh?"
Brayden:  "pretty much, yeah."

July 2013:
Brayden watched one to many "Goosebumps" movies and was scared to be alone… so he offered this deal to Jack if Jack would stay with him…
Brayden tells Jack "if you stay in the bathroom with me, I will take away all your sins." I didn't know Brayden had that kind of power!!!

Me Against All Three

Summer 2013:
Driving in the car...
Me: "Brayden, can I use your blanket?"
Brayden: "But mom I'm cold so I'm using it."
Me: "Brayden, I'm so cold. You owe me you know...  I grew you in my tummy for 9 months and kept you warm and safe and happy. Now I need you to share your blanket with me... okay?"
Jack (from the backseat): "You won't be able to use that on Bella mom."
Me: "What Jack?"
Jack: "Aunt Sadie is the one that kept Bella warm in her tummy for 9 months so Bella doesn't have to share her blanket with you."
I laughed so hard that I got really hot and didn't need a blanket after that! Families come together all different ways! And I LOVE my little girl!

I simply really love these kids.

Overcoming Reno by Brayden Jolley

Overcoming Reno
by: Brayden Jolley

So, I accidentally erased this original post… then I swore… now I'm just rewriting Brayden's homework that he wrote at school last week.  I'm so mad I erased this… doesn't blogger have a backup for people who don't know what they are doing like me???

"As Brayden's mom came back from Reno where the terrible plane crash happened.  Brayden and his brother Jack ran over and kept asking her if she was ok.  "Our you alright?  Did the plane hit you?  Are you scared, mad or sad?"  "Yes, I'm okay, just sad."  Suddenly the fear of Brayden began.

Every year Brayden begged his mom not to go.  "Please don't go! It might happen again and this time you might die."  "No I won't."  "Okay, just watch out."  As she left Brayden wondered if she would come back.

The next three years Brayden has been scared about his mom leaving but she never got hurt.  So Brayden began to think that nothing would happen to her so he never got scared about her leaving to Reno."

To sum it up… again, this makes me sad.  And confused.  But, I don't doubt that I am doing the right thing by going year after year and facing something that can be so scary for me… and, making my kids face something that can be so scary for them too.

Brayden has one big heart.  Always has.  Hope he keeps it his whole life.

(Oh, and Mandy, I won't post those scary pictures, just for you!)

Jack and the Principal are BFF's

This is an email I sent to Jack's teacher this morning, I think it captures what I wanted it to…
Hey Mrs. Burgess,
So I had to share this funny experience we had at the Jolley home the other night.  My oldest son, Brayden, was complaining about math and asked me if he could be tutored in math after school.  I told him that I would look into it and see if I could schedule it the same time as Bella's tutoring... just then Jack chimed in and said, "yeah mom, I need tutoring too, I'm getting an S- in citizenship and I need to be tutored in that!".  I about died laughing and later, once I caught my breath, explained to him that citizenship focuses on doing what you are suppose to be doing, keeping the rules, not talking when your teacher is talking, and having a good attitude.  I told him we could "tutor" him at home but mostly, he has to control his impulses!  Anyway, I thought you may get a little kick out of that!
 TC Jolley
The attitude just rolls off my Jack in this picture!

Oh the laughs I have everyday because of my kids.  I truly love this phase of life with them… they are at such great ages.

Brave Hearts

Yeah, I beat the "it's been a year since I last wrote" mark by a day!  WOO-HOO!  So I'm writing, mostly because I gave my blog address out to some amazing women and I feel like maybe I should let them know that yes, although it has ALMOST been a year, I still write… occasionally!  I have so much to say but I'm not in a place or mindful orginazation and peace so I won't start.  In the meantime, welcome new friends, if you are reading this then I guess you stopped by!  Also, to my old and faithful followers, if you still follow my blog, you are the most patient, enduring type!  My thought for the day…

BE BRAVE

I hope to be a more consistent writer soon.  I have so much to talk about!!!

Love ya, Tice
